Presentation Summary

Title Biases that arise during disasters
Survey Introduction Based on the experience of the past disasters by which many lives were taken, we want a lot of people to be able to protect their lives in the next disaster by making it possible for people in disaster-prone Japan to make correct decisions and evacuate anytime, anywhere.
Method Research from various conference papers and the Internet
Subject ①Normalcy bias and majority-synchronization bias occur during disasters
②Normalcy bias:stay calm and recognize that you're panicking Majority-synchronization bias:
・if the lead evacuee shows up, everyone can evacuate
・this bias works effectively if there are a lot of people who evacuate the right way

☆Having some knowledge of the two biases can connect with the ability to survive
Results ・ Even if we made the understanding of the two biases known widely and taught people how to effectively use the biases, it would still not be enough to encourage people to act when a disaster actually strikes
We need to find some easier ways of telling these biases to the children
Issues ・ Even if we made the understanding of the two biases known widely and taught people how to effectively use the biases, it would still not be enough to encourage people to act when a disaster actually strikes

Action Plan ・Interview/Ask our local government about the experiences of the past disasters and learn from the predecessors' teaching/reflections of them
・Learning from"Tendenko"and "The miracle of Kamaishi," spreading these lessons to more people“Tendenko”— A slogan which means“When a tsunami happens, don't bring anything or watch out for your family members, just escape to the high place apart”
“The miracle in Kamaishi”—— 570 students in Kamaishi city,Iwate prefecture,
